COP 17 !...COP 17 finally ended in the early hours of 11th of December, and the African COP eventually delivered the inclusion of agriculture in the climate negotiations agenda, as many who have an interest in agriculture had called for after many failed attempts in previous COPs. This can be considered historic since it is the first time that the UNFCCC parties adopts a decision on agriculture, even though the Durban negotiations outcome fell short of recommending a work programme on agriculture as had been requested by most agricultural stakeholders including SACAU. The full text of the decision on the outcome of the work of the COP’s Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action - where agriculture is dealt with (in chapter II - D ‘Cooperative sectoral approaches and sector-specific actions’)- can be accessed at: http://unfccc.int/files/meetings/durban_nov_2011/decisions/application/pdf/cop17_lcaoutcome.pdf
Although agriculture has one foot in the door, a lot still needs to be done to ensure a climate agreement that fully recognises the role of agriculture in responding to climate change and its potential as a part of the solution. Next year SACAU will continue engaging with agricultural stakeholders to ensure this process keeps on moving forward.

On March 29, 2011, SACAU participated in the international gathering of farming organisations which took place in Brussels, Belgium, to highlight the need for the farmers’ voice to be heard on the world stage and to formally create the World Farmers’Organisation. Such an organisation is crucial in order to contribute to the on-going discussions concerning food security, climate change and the economic situation worldwide. The intended aim is to bring together national producer organisations and producer cooperative organisations to create policies and advocate on world farmers behalf, in order to improve the economic situation and livelihood of producers, their families and rural communities. The next steps for the World Farmers’ Organisation include an inaugural General Meeting, which will be held in South Africa in September. As the 17th edition of the United Nations Conference of Parties (COP 17) on climate change is coming to Durban , South Africa, in December 2011, SACAU will be coordinating the development and effective communication of concrete and coherent messages from farmers in southern Africa with a view to influencing the Conference deliberations. Climate change is certainly one of the greatest challenges affecting farmers now and in the future in southern Africa. It is thus important that southern African farmers issues and concerns, as well as their obligations and responsibilities towards addressing this great challenge, are made more visible and prominent in the run-up to and during the Conference process. The goal of SACAU's participation will be to ensure that African farmers' concerns are incorporated and addressed in the outcomes of the Conference. Forming broad alliances with other organisations outside the immediate farming circles will also be a key element of the strategy.
Further information and updates on this important initiative will be regularly shared on SACAU’s website.
